Woyzeck

a physical performance exploring the dark sides of civilisation

Press quotes

“Deeply original wordless production with Glad Theatre’s skilled and daring performers, who manage to make an impression in Jesper Michelsen’s dazzling staging… among Glad Theatre’s greatest artistic triumphs. Three quarters of incomparably choreographed war chaos not to be missed.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Michael Søby, Cphculture.dk

“Relentless narrative… Every now and then there is the possibility of a little tenderness, but the shame and degradation cannot be washed away, and no one helps the underdog… The five participants in Glad Theatre’s performance complete the story with great certainty.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Knud Cornelius, Frederiksborg Amts Avis

“Wild, mad, intrepid and mighty… an acid bath of emotions… Insistent and utterly fearless. All words are reduced to a dark symphony of colors, skillfully directed by Jesper Michelsen, sweepingly choreographed by Kasper Ravnhøj. Johan Kølkjær has created the dark garrison scenography. Music and sound design by Rune Abel Aagaard. It plays closely with the lighting design by John Ivar Venned. In such a visual performance, light and sound becomes the breath through the story. It is all strongly embodied by the five actors from Glad Teater”
– Michael Svennevig

exploring the dark sides of civilisation

In Glad Theatre’s version of WOYZECK, words have lost their meaning and through powerful choreographic images the five performers portray the tragic love story of Woyzeck and Marie, the loneliness of the Captain and the Drum Major’s playing for hope.

In a constant battle for supremacy, our characters fight each other and the brutal reality they are in. They have lost their humanity and as beasts they struggle for survival in a world they do not control. One by one, the characters are thrown into a dance of desire, domination, and death – and as they drown in blood, they reach for a tiny glimpse of hope and reshape this classic play into an intensely moving and disturbing piece of theatre.
